2012 Tesla S pictures revealed

Tesla has today revealed pics of its sleek 2012 ‘S’ sedan showing the four-door in motion.

The Tesla S is set to rival other EVs such as the Fisker Karma as well as conventionally powered luxury rivals including the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Designed by Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla says the front end styling of the ‘S’ will be the future face of the electric automaker. Short front and rear overhangs not only give the sedan a clean, sporting look, but also allows for the maximum interior space.

The Tesla S rides on 21-inch alloys while inside features include a highly customisable, 17-inch touch screen for HVAC, audio and navigation controls as well as 3G wireless internet; digital and satellite radio and a panaoramic sunroof.

The ‘S’ has seating for five adults, plus optional rear-facing seats for two small children in the cargo area.

In keeping with the brand’s green theme, Tesla uses chrome-free vegetable tanned Italian leather on interior, and 100 per cent recycled PET carpeting.

The electric sedan can travel up to 480 kilometres on a single charge with a “QuickCharge” taking only 45 minutes to complete. If that’s not quick enough, the battery can be changed for a fully-charge unit in under five minutes.

To further increase efficiency, the door handles retract at speed making a cleaner aerodynamic shape.

With a tare weight of 1490kg and a single speed variable transmission the ‘S’ makes the 0-100km/h run in 5.6 seconds and can run to 400m in 14 seconds flat. Top speed is estimated at 193km/h.

Braking comes courtesy of six-pot Brembos up front, and fours on the rear. An all-wheel drive model is also planned in the near future.

The ‘S’ will be Tesla’s second model joining the Roadster sports and is due for production late 2011 with a retail price of US$49,900 (after the US$7500 electric vehicle tax credit).

More Details On 2011 BMW 5-Series

With the 2009 Audi A6 facelift now on sale and the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class starting to hit showrooms, attention now turns to the next-generation BMW 5-series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-series Sedan and Touring wagon remain crucial vehicles in BMW’s lineup and with the next-gen versions now just months away from launch speculation about their final design has been heating up.

The new 5-series Sedan is expected to arrive early next year as a 2011 model but we can already gather a number of details from disguised prototypes seen testing around the streets of Munich. Most of the planned changes for the 2011 BMW 5-Series, however, are skin-deep.

Under the new sheet metal, BMW will continue with its new found love of turbocharging. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 from the X6 and new 5-series GT is expected to appear in a range topping model, while more turbodiesel variants are expected to join the lineup as well. BMW is also expected to launch two hybrid versions of the new 5-Series: a ‘mild’ hybrid gasoline-electric version similar to the recently revealed ActiveHybrid 7 as well as a diesel-electric version.

The transmission systems will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed Steptronic semi-auto gearbox, however a new eight-speed unit from ZF is also expected to be available. New EfficientDynamics technologies will also be available, such as specially designed aerodynamic wheels and brake-energy regeneration systems.

Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car’s construction will be a mix of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. High-performance models will possibly include carbon-fiber body panels to shed even more weight.

MECs choose cheaper cars

Gauteng's top politicians appear to have heeded the call by Premier Nomvula Mokonyane to curb spending on luxury cars.

It has taken The Star a month to get a complete list of vehicles being driven by Mokonyane and her 10 MECs.

The list shows that none have bought new cars since the infamous R920 000 Mercedes-Benz purchased by former agriculture and rural development MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

So far, no departments have indicated plans to splash out on new vehicles, and the MECs are driving their predecessors' cars or hiring from the government's fleet (G-Fleet).

Mokonyane is using a 2007 BMW 750 which belonged to earlier premiers Mbhazima Shilowa and Paul Mashatile. Her office has said that "a decision has not been taken" on whether to buy a new car. She is assigned two alternating drivers by the police's VIP Protection Unit.

All but one of Gauteng MECs are driven around in BMWs, with Roads and Transport MEC Bheki Nkosi using an Audi Q7. At least five departments hire from the G-Fleet, with some contracts due to run until 2011.

G-Fleet's Thando Zungu said MECs pay about R23 500 a month to hire their cars. The vehicles are replaced when they have done 120 000km, and are fully owned by the fleet. At this rate, an MEC would spend about R280 000 a year on his or her transport.

According to the ministerial handbook, a minister or MEC is allowed to buy a car costing about 70 percent of his or her annual remuneration package.

In the case of Nkomo-Ralehoko, the purchase of her Mercedes-Benz fell within the rules. However, she was dismissed after it turned out that the car had not been insured before being hijacked less than 24 hours after it was collected from the dealership. There have also been allegations of fraud within the department surrounding the deal.

The "WaBenzi frenzy" has struck several ministries, with the latest being Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor, who bought a pair of matching Mercedes-Benzes worth a total of R1.4 million.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has come under fire for his two BMW X5s worth R1.3m, including R200 000 for extras. The DA estimates that the total spent on new government vehicles was almost R20m. The party has dubbed the scandal "cargate".

But DA Gauteng leader Jack Bloom on Sunday congratulated Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu for setting a good example by driving her 2006 BMW 5 series. The car is on loan from G-Fleet.

"I think this is an appropriate vehicle, recognising her status but not extravagant when money is desperately short to fix our hospitals and clinics," Bloom said. "I hope her colleagues take note."

Cars used by other MECs include a BMW 530, a BMW X5, a BMW 520, a BMW 520d, a BMW 550i and an Audi Q7.

2010 North American Car of the Year: And the Nominees Are...

NACTOY logo

Enlarge Photo
Each fall, 50 journalists from the most respected automotive media outlets get together to choose NACOTYs--in long form, the North American Car of the Year and Truck of the Year.

In just a few years of existence, the NACOTY have become one of the most respected awards in the industry. Designed to recognize the outstanding new vehicles in their segments, the awards also have given car shoppers and car enthusiasts an inside tip on the vehicles driving the future of the auto industry--vehicles like the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, the 2008 Mazda CX-9, and the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado.

The jury pool for the 2010 awards reads like a who's who of the automotive media. It includes editors from Edmunds, Road & Track, Automotive News, Kelley Blue Book and USA Today, as well as the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, the Boston Globe, the Toronto Star and the Detroit Free Press. The jury also includes an experienced group of freelancers published across the Web, in print, and on camera.

I'm proud to report that this year, I've been selected as a member of the NACOTY jury. It's an honor that roughly equates to 20 years of weekends poring over media kits and sites, shooting cars at sunrise and dusk, praying for a sane driving partner on press events, and sitting in the middle seat on cross-country flights to preview next year's new cars and trucks. And it's pretty humbling, when you consider the experienced hands already on deck.

Along with the other newbies--Car and Driver editor Eddie Alterman and freelancer Ezra Dyer--I'm spending this month catching up on the vehicles introduced for the 2010 model year that made the list of nominees. You'll read about all of them in future posts across High Gear Media's network of Web sites. And later this fall, you'll get the earliest rundown of the finalists for January's 2010 NACOTY awards, coming to you from the 2010 Detroit auto show.

For now, take a look at this list and let us know which car and truck qualifies as your NACOTY. While you're at it, why not write about it for High Gear Media, too?

BMW V12 engine in Lazareth Wazuma quad

ll, from McLaren F1 to Wiesmann, but when the French automobile and motorcycle builder Lazareth managed to squeeze in the big and powerful BMW V12 engine in one of their Wazuma quads…..well let’s just say, it was no surprise it made the headlines of many auto publications.

The Wazuma Bio V12 is a four-wheeled 500-horsepower speed machine, fueled with E85 bio-ethanol, turing the powerful quad into an eco-friendly machine. The decision to run E85 as fuel was based on its superior octane rating.

Over the years, BMW’s engines have been used by other car makers as we
The quad comes with a hefty price, 200,000 euros. the equivalent of $283,000.

Judging by the footage below, the Wazuma Bio V12 seems to be a pretty darn cool machine. Oh…did we mention fast also?

Road Test: 2009 Infiniti M35x AWD

Author: Brian Armstead, Canadian Auto Press
Published: Thursday, August 13, 2009

The near luxury auto segment is crowded with serious competitors. The Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF, Lincoln MKS, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are all worthy rivals. But if you cross the "pond," having bypassed all of the above named American and European studs, you'll end up in Japan. There, you'll be able to consider two entrants for this segment – the Lexus GS and Infiniti M.

Now I've driven all of the aforementioned models, and for my money I'll take the 2009 Infiniti M. The M comes in V6 (M35) rear-drive form in the US or V8 (M45) rear- or all-wheel drive guise in Canada (AWD receiving an "x" designation – M35x, M45x), with no rear-drive M35 in Canada. Why does the M take the crown? Because to me it does everything just about right, and does it with so little fuss that you'd be hard pressed to think you were maintaining a serious performance sedan, as its Sentra-like operating expenses are sure to please you and your bank account.

Consider this: both M models come with engine timing chains, not fabric, rubber or metal belts that many competitors feature. Forget the required change intervals of these lesser alternatives and you'll torpedo your engine. Not having to complete this one major maintenance item can save you up to a grand over the competition. Also, look at leading consumer ratings for the above models. Now in fairness, all are relatively reliable, but the Japanese have proven they are at the top of the reliability game. European brands, bless them all, have a reputation for pricey repairs and finicky components. Think Mercedes in the mid 2000s when electrical gremlins abounded, or Audi or BMW with their unreliable automatic transmissions, in some earlier models. Take a peek at Consumer Reports' analysis of the M and it's an "all-red" affair. Red dots are an indication of stellar reliability, whereas solid black dots spell out potential trouble areas. Mercedes has certainly rebounded with new reliable models, but when you factor in initial purchase price, cost of ownership, and resale value, again, the M is a big winner.

So what about the Lexus GS? A nice car indeed, but really devoid of much if any driving feedback. It's quiet, reliable and has loads of luxury features, but every time I drive one I need a double espresso.

This long intro leads us to this week's tester, the 2009 Infiniti M35x. It's a blast to drive, offering a powerful 303hp V6 and superb road manners. Oh, and it looks pretty darn good as well.

Styling is all sport coat and leather loafers. This is a performance luxo-cruiser after all, not some stiff suit with a double-knotted tie. It was developed to be a runner – long and lithe. Looking at it head on, large air ducts reside below the bumper to feed intake air and cool the brakes. Infiniti's signature chrome slat grille is flanked by adaptive HID headlamps. A high rear deck houses LED taillights, and quad exhaust tips let pretenders know your M35 is for real. My tester also includes (among other features) gorgeous 19" polished alloy wheels. The look is athletic, and very complete. There is no sense that designers should have done "this" or "that" to make the M whole.

Inside, technology has become the hallmark of the Infiniti brand. Your kids will have a ball with their alphabet soup trying to sort out all of the acronyms associated with this car. AABS, VDC, TCS, EBD, AFS, LDW, LDP and ICC are but a few. Now, my space for this review does not give me chance to explain what they all mean (Infiniti's excellent Web site can break them down for you), but two of my favourites are the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system and Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). The former gives an audible warning when you stray from your intended lane, and the latter uses radar to keep your preset distance to the car in front of you. They are both optional on the M, included with other features in the $7,250 Technology Package.

Infiniti's M35x AWD starts at $54,900. Truly, the M35 is close to automotive perfection, and competes well not only in its own segment, but against much more expensive models.

Ask the Best and Brightest: Die Run-Flats, Die?

I’ve never hid my contempt for run-flat tires. And for good reason. When testing a BMW 5-Series equipped with the technology, the driving experience was so bad I returned it to the dealer to try a car without the tough-as-nails (and then some), tram-lining donuts. Sure enough, the “normal” tires delivered infinitely superior, brand-faithful ride and handling. I also got caught-up in the Honda Odyssey - Michelin Pax class action debacle; I shelled-out huge money for two sets of tires so stiff they’d make French soufflĂ© makers envious. Autoweek recently reported that run-flats are in retreat, accounting for less then one percent of the U.S. market. That’s one percent too many—and not just because of the expense or compromised driving dynamics. As this email from rspaight indicates:

I bought a 3-series recently, and it was equipped with a set of run-flats and nowhere to put a spare. BMW M cars have conventional tires, no spare, and a can of tire sealant. Same with Porsches. Corvettes? Run-flats. MINIs? Run-flats. As I leafed through the latest Car & Driver, I saw that both the Taurus SHO and new Cadillac SRX said “none” in the space next to “Spare Tire.” It seems that spare tires are becoming increasingly vestigial as car evolution progresses. Is it crazy to think this is over-optimistic? The attached photo shows the mayhem my friend’s Cavalier experienced in an Interstate construction zone a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think either run-flats or a can of sealant would have helped much in this case. My friend spent ten minutes putting on the donut and was safely on his way with his wife and kids. As it should be?

Infiniti M teaser

* New M saloon
* Third-generation model
* More details later this week

Here is a tantalising glimpse of Infiniti's new M saloon.

The new version will be the first M to be sold in Europe, but the third-generation of the car.

Slotting in above the G37 saloon, the M will be a rival for cars such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

A 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine is confirmed, but the M is likely to get a V8 petrol option, too.

Diesel and hybrid power likely
Diesel and hybrid petrol/electric versions are also expected.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine used in the Renault Laguna is likely to be available in the M, thanks to Infiniti's parent company, Nissan, having an alliance with the French manufacturer.

UK prices and an on-sale date have yet to be confirmed, but Infiniti says it will release more pictures and information at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California on August 15.
2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW's Green Four-Door Coupe
BMW's plans for the Frankfurt Auto Show are coming into clearer focus this week as prior reports of a green-themed Coupe have been shucked aside by the company's PR folks.

While BMW plans a 50th-anniversary celebration for the MINI brand, a worldwide reveal of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, and a new generation of the venerable BMW 5-Series sedan, it's also planning a stunning four-door coupe concept that could go green--in the form of a small three-cylinder turbocharged engine, according to a speculative piece today in AutoExpress.

The angular coupe, they report, is dubbed the EfficientDynamics Vision. A sleek drawing predicts what could show up on the BMW stand in Frankfurt, but there's nothing to prepare showgoers for the unexpected drivetrain underneath the hood.

The new concept will sport a three-cylinder turbocharged engine, as the story goes. It'll also have hybrid power to propel it.

If it pans out, the new concept and its drivetrain would likely share its lithium-ion battery pack with the new BMW 7-Series Hybrid also due at the Frankfurt show. It would also provide the German automaker with a cohesive green theme--particularly if those other reports about an "i-Setta" electric city car prove true.

TheCarConnection and Motor Authority will be in Frankfurt to show you more from the show floor; you can bookmark our Frankfurt Auto Show tag and come back here often for previews and updates prior to show week.
